Lease-to-own vs BNPL: don’t confuse the two

Why Progressive Leasing, Acima, and Katapult are not the same as Affirm-style installments—and how total cost differs.

At furniture and electronics retailers, lease-to-own is often presented next to buy-now-pay-later. They solve similar timing problems but are different contracts.

BNPL / installment loans

You typically buy the item and repay in installments. Cost depends on APR (including true 0% promos) and fees.

Lease-to-own

You lease the item with an option to own. Paying only the minimum over the full term often means a higher total cost than the cash price. Early payoff options may exist—read them.

Why the distinction matters

Shoppers who think they’re getting “0% financing” sometimes accept a lease structure instead. BuyLater badges Lease-to-own providers so the difference is visible before you click out.

Rule of thumb

Compare total amount paid if you keep the schedule, not just the weekly or monthly payment size.

Educational only—not financial advice. Confirm every offer with the provider.
