What “true 0%” pay-later actually means
Deferred interest is not the same as interest-free. Here’s how to spot real 0% BNPL plans.
“0% financing” can mean two very different things.
True 0%
You pay no interest if you follow the payment schedule. Missed payments may trigger late fees, but you typically don’t get a retroactive interest bomb for the whole purchase—check the contract.
Deferred interest
Some store cards and promotions charge 0% only if you pay the full balance by a deadline. If anything remains after that date, interest may be applied back to the original purchase amount. That is not the same as true installment 0%.
How to protect yourself
1. Read whether interest is waived only if paid in full by a date.
2. Prefer plans that show a fixed payment schedule with 0% APR stated for the term.
3. Use BuyLater’s 0% only filter as a starting point, then verify on the provider’s terms page.
